Case narrative

A reconstruction of the events leading up to the disappearance.

Stuart Isaac Missing

When you try to research the disappearance of Stuart Isaac, you run straight into the usual nonsense from sites like strangeoutdoors.com. Everything is “Shocking,” “Strange,” or “Disturbing”—clickbait adjectives slapped onto cases they barely understand. Half the information is wrong, and the rest is padded out with filler.

There is nothing shocking about Stuart Isaac’s disappearance. In fact, it’s depressingly normal. Vehicles turn up without their owners all the time. A few examples from our own database:

  • Robert Wills vanished while deer hunting. His vehicle was found. He wasn’t.
  • The missing German tourists in Death Valley—their van was found, abandoned.
  • Daniel Robinson—his clothes were found near his crashed vehicle in the desert.

Stuart fits the same pattern.

Who Was Stuart Isaac?

Stuart was a 48‑year‑old Pacific Islander from Burtonsville, Maryland. On 6 September 2006, he left a note for his family saying he was going on a cross‑country trip. This was immediately strange—Stuart wasn’t an outdoorsman. He wasn’t a hiker, he wasn’t a camper, and he wasn’t physically prepared for wilderness travel.

He was a big man: 5'8"–5'10", 215–230 lbs, with no known outdoor experience and, as far as anyone can tell, no equipment.

Stuart Calls a Friend

The next confirmed activity doesn’t happen until 24 September 2010 at 3:30 AM—four years later, which is its own mystery. Stuart called his high‑school friend Matsue Evans, who lives in Guam. The call was unexpected; they usually communicated by text or email because of the time difference.

They spoke for two hours. Matsue reported nothing unusual. Stuart told her:

“He said he was en route to Yellowstone.”

That means from 7 September to 24 September, no one knows where Stuart was or what he was doing. Some reports claim he arrived in Yellowstone 32 hours after leaving home, but there is zero evidence for this—no witnesses, no hotel bookings, no paper trail at all.

Vehicle Found

On 26 September 2010, a routine patrol discovered Stuart’s vehicle:

  • 2009 Lexus IS‑250, black
  • Tag: BELLEK
  • Location: Craig Pass, Yellowstone
  • Vehicle unlocked, keys inside

Craig Pass sits on the Continental Divide at 2,518 m elevation. There are no trails in the area. Officers immediately knew something was wrong.

Stuart was officially reported missing after the vehicle was found.

Authorities searched the area, but no trace of Stuart has ever been located.

We know he was alive on the 24th, and his vehicle was found on the 26th. That’s a very small window.

Vanished.us Says

This case isn’t mysterious. It’s tragic, but it’s not supernatural, and it’s not complicated.

The most likely scenario is the simplest: After the phone call to Matsue, Stuart drove to Craig Pass and took his own life.

It’s worth asking whether police ever checked if he owned a firearm or purchased one in the days leading up to the disappearance. Many people who go missing make a final, unexpected call to someone they care about. It’s a pattern we’ve seen again and again.

Stuart Isaac’s vehicle was found. Stuart Isaac was not. And in this part of Yellowstone, that usually means one thing.
