Joseph Robert Clewley went missing on the 12th of July 2008 from Tahquamenon Falls State Park. Joseph Robert Clewley was 78 years old when he went missing and was 5’10, 150 Ibs. He may have been wearing a blue short-sleeved polo shirt over a white undershirt, with a blue zip-up jacket, grey or tan khaki pants at the time of his disappearance. Clewley had a cabin in the area that he vanished from. His wife reported that she last saw Joseph on the 10th of July 2008. She disliked staying at the cabin but he preferred the solitude and would stay there for weeks at a time.
Joseph always checked in with his wife at 9 a.m and 9 p.m every day. On July 13, Joseph missed his 9:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. check-ins with his wife. After he missed them again the next day, she and other family members asked the police to conduct a welfare check. When the local police arrived on site they found his Cabin locked and his dog Clewly gone. Joseph’s 1992 Oldsmobile Silhouette van was found at the head of North Country Trail and this is marked as his last know location. Officers noticed its gas tank was almost empty and it was unlocked with the keys left inside.
Twenty days after Joseph Robert Clewley disappeared, Chip reappeared at the cabin. The woofer was thin but clean and in good condition. Speculation was the dog may have possibly been looked after. Nothing was ever found of Joseph Robert Clewley and he remains missing presumed dead. But why?
Puzzling. There is absolutely no motive. People do not abduct old men for no reason but why the empty tank of gas? It would make sense someone moved him to another location if they did kill him and the dog went too. They brought the car back to cover their tracks. Without knowing how much gas was in the car it is impossible to guess an area as to where the vehicle went to. A guesstimate could maybe be made based on the dog and how long it took to arrive back at the cabin. We know Joseph missed his check-in on the 13th July at 9 a.m but we know he made his check-in on the 12th at 9 p.m. Something happened in the next 12 hours that we cannot explain.
