Allen Clarence Theis — Missing From the Upper Missouri River Breaks
Allen Clarence Theis, 52, vanished from the Lewistown / Upper Missouri River Breaks region of Montana on November 22, 2003. He had traveled from his home in Eden Valley, Minnesota, for a solo hunting trip. Before leaving, he told his mother he planned to return by the end of the month — or sooner.
Allen checked into the Super 8 Motel in Lewistown on November 22nd and was scheduled to check out on the 24th. When he still hadn’t checked out by November 26th, staff contacted law enforcement, and he was officially reported missing.
Allen was described as:
- 5'10"
- 160 lbs
- Gray hair
- Hazel eyes
- No known medical issues
He was also an exceptional outdoorsman. For ten years he had worked for GeoComm, a GPS and mapping company. His employer described him as responsible, reliable, and highly competent in the field.
The Search for Allen Theis
A search plane located Allen’s truck near the Stafford Ferry on the Missouri River. Inside the vehicle:
- An empty rifle case
- A pair of boots on the floor
There were no signs of struggle, no tracks leading away, and no indication of where Allen had gone. No scent trail. No belongings. No rifle. No clothing. No remains.
Despite searches by air and ground, no further evidence has ever been found.

Here’s another experienced hunter who disappears in the wild with no trace — no gear, no rifle, no clothing, nothing. If this were a simple accident, you would expect something to turn up: a boot, a backpack, a dropped item, a sign of a fall, or even the rifle itself.
Instead, we have a vehicle parked neatly near the river, an empty rifle case, and a man with deep outdoor experience who walked away and was never seen again.
Accident? Possibly. But the total lack of evidence makes this one of the more unsettling cases in the region.
