Connie Johnson — Vanished in the Fog Mountain Backcountry
Connie Johnson disappeared from a base camp near Big Rock, deep in the Fog Mountain region. She was seventy‑six years old, dressed in a green shirt, green pants, and Kenetrek boots — the uniform of someone who knew the backcountry better than most people half her age.
And Connie wasn’t just a hiker. She spent decades living and working in the wilderness: U.S. Forest Service wilderness ranger, youth expedition guide, and, at the time she vanished, camp cook for Richie Outfitters, a company that leads hunters into some of the most remote terrain in Idaho and Montana. Friends described her as “a woman who spent the last 25 years of her life — most of them — on foot in the wilderness.” That wasn’t an exaggeration.
The Last Known Contact
Connie was last seen on 2 October 2018 at camp with her dog, Ace, just before the hunters left for an overnight trip. The next day, the hunters received a radio transmission from her — but the message was garbled. Some blamed a weak signal. Others weren’t so sure. What’s certain is that this was the last communication anyone ever had with her.
When the hunters returned on 5 October, Connie and Ace were gone. Her coat was still at camp. Underneath it: her gun. The hunters reported her missing immediately.
A Search With No Answers
The search lasted three weeks and covered hundreds of square miles. Ground teams, canine units, helicopters, FLIR, and even a Forest Service aircraft combed the region. Not a single trace of Connie was found. The official search ended on 16 October 2018.
Three weeks later, Ace reappeared — thin, exhausted, but alive — wandering near the Moose Creek Ranger Station, roughly fifteen miles from the camp. Searchers flew him out for care, then brought him back to camp, hoping he might lead them to Connie. He didn’t. He showed no interest in any particular direction.

This case is unsettling for several reasons. Connie disappeared on the same day as Terrence Woods — roughly forty miles south of Big Rock. He was never found either.
We don’t actually know when Connie vanished. The most logical moment is immediately after that garbled radio call. Why would she use the radio unless something was wrong? And the radio itself was never recovered.
Did she injure herself? Did someone — or something — approach the camp? Did she leave voluntarily? Or is there a connection between her disappearance and Terrence Woods?
The wilderness keeps its secrets, but this one feels different.
