The Disappearance of Tom Opperman
Tom Opperman was last seen at Merced Lake on 8 August 1967. His plan was ambitious but straightforward: hike from Merced Lake to Mount Clark, continue on to Glacier Point, and return to Yosemite Valley by 10 August 1967.
When he failed to return, a search was launched. Canine teams were deployed, and 16 Marines were brought in to sweep the Merced Lake, Mount Clark, and Glacier Point regions. The search continued until 15 August 1967, but no trace of Opperman—or any of his personal belongings—was ever found.
Tom’s disappearance occurred during a cluster of other notable Yosemite vanishings. Around the same period, John Gunn and Kenneth Klein also went missing. Only one of the three—John Gunn—was ever recovered, and even that raised questions: he was found in an area that had already been searched multiple times, with a broken neck and evidence of drowning.
Years later, in 1981, Stacy Arras would vanish in the same general region where Tom disappeared. She stepped away from a group for only a moment and was never seen again.
Tom Opperman remains missing. Not a single item linked to him has ever surfaced.
